Acupuncture treatment is given by inserting very fine, sterile, disposable needles into acupuncture points, which are located on energy channels, known as meridians, on the body.  These needles are much finer than those used for medical purposes, minimal discomfort is felt on insertion of the needle, however, there might be a sensation that can feel like a dull ache or tingling.

The acupuncture points needled may not be located near, or on, the area where symptoms are being experienced, but they will have been chosen for a specific function of the point to ensure the best possible response and outcome to treatment.  Needles may be left in situ for approximately 10-20 minutes, but are more commonly inserted and removed immediately following a very gentle manipulation technique.

Side-effects from acupuncture are infrequent, although people can experience a short-lasting sense of fatigue or mild dizziness following treatment, and there is a slight risk of a very small amount of bleeding, and/or bruising on removal of an acupuncture needle.
